My dad, Dr. Jeffrey Michael Nicastro, exemplifies positive masculinity: He’s honest, hard-working, magnanimous, even-keeled, competent, and caring. In addition to these laudable qualities, he has some remarkable witticisms that I would like to share with the world.
Here are some of the best, in no particular order:
“Nice counts.”
Short, sweet, and simple. Nothing to add here.
“The likelihood you are correct is inversely proportional to the vehemence with which you feel you are.”
If you’re a raving dogmatist, chill out and check your premises.
“When you’re in a hole, stop digging.”
One I do not heed often enough.
“Life is what happens when you’re waiting for the next thing.”
One many Type A personalities would do well to internalize. It is important to work towards medium- and long-term goals, and you must enjoy, i.e., find worthwhile/purposive, what you’re doing in the here and now.
“If you’re lucky enough, you get old.”
Although aging comes with its inconveniences (so I’m told), it is always better than the alternative.
Happy Father’s Day to fathers past and present. May we cherish them while they’re with us.
